The Pop Word: Black Lips to Produce Punk Song for Ke$ha

The Pop Word is a column about the pop world.

Sooo, did you know that Ke$ha’s ex-boyfriend is in Cheap Time? I did not.

If you’re next question is “Who the fuck is Cheap Time?” you are forgiven. They’re one of those lo-fi bands in a sea of lo-fi bands that recently cropped up over the last few years. Maybe not a band that’s going to knock your socks off with originality, but decidedly cooler than Ke$ha’s bad girl brand of pop music, that’s for sure.

Anyway… the Black Lips have a new song called “Mad Dog”, which is about playing records backwards, a tribute to the era in which bands used this method to implant subliminal messages. Well, the Black Lips chose a Ke$ha song for their experiment, singing one of her songs forwards but it plays backwards. Mad Dog backwards is God Dam. They said she liked it but was also a little weirded out by it.

Singer/guitarist Cole Alexander told Spinner: “She wants us to do a punk rock song with her—she likes punk rock. So we’re working on that.”

Lead guitarist Ian St. Pe said, “She’s come to our shows. Actually, her ex-boyfriend’s band, we used to play with all the time, Cheap Time. She used to hang out with normal people like us—getting to the top, it’s lonely but it’s got a killer view.”

Seriously? This kind of thing should happen way more often than it does… actually, has it ever happened where a pop star and an indie/punk band have collaborated?
